Dinosaur Bird Nesting Sight

In a large stand of white sycamore trees, in the middle of Hunter Acres woods is the nesting sight of what looks to be a giant pre-historic big. These birds are big, loud and in large groups, stinky! Their nests are at the tops of the tallest trees in the forest. This makes sense because they are very large birds and they would not be able to land in trees that were lower.

I remember the first time I ever saw a Great Blue Heron up close. I was around 16 years old. I had gotten up early and decided to take a bike ride on the country road just west of our neighborhood, about a half mile from my house. It was during a time when as a kid you could still leave the house alone and not be afraid that something might happen and you would not be able to return home. Our biggest worry then was crashing the bike or getting a flat tire. I rode my bike, crossing the “big’ road and glided quietly over the bridge that spanned White Lick Creek. The air was warm and heavy, it was late summer and the humidity was on high. I rode a ways up the hill, listening to the birds beginning to awake. When I came back across the bridge, I stopped. I was looking upstream, still in the gray dark/light that happens just sun is within reach of the horizon, but still a few minutes away.

Suddenly I caught the movement of a very large bird silently gliding just above the surface of the water. The wing span was almost a wide as the water in the creek. This is not a small creek, not huge, but one you have to wade across, no jumping it, even in two steps. So now I would guess it at being 10-12 feet across, maybe more. It looked as if it would fly into me, but then the magnificent bird dropped just a bit more and flew under the bridge, right under my feet! I moved as quietly as i could to the other side to watch it continue to glide down the creek. I could barely breathe.

Fast forward to Thursday 4-24-2014 when I got to take my first trek to Hunter Acres Magic Woods. One of the must see places I was fortunate enough to get to be escorted to was the nesting grounds for the pterodactyl bird…dinosaur bird or Great Blue Heron. I was afraid our noise would scare them, but my guide told me they would not leave the nests, they would just squawk very loudly and a lot if we got too close or too loud.

At first I saw large, messy nests in the tops of the tallest trees in the area. The nests almost looked too loose to be finished. But they were homes to at least twenty of the monstrous beauties. I stood, trying to get a good vantage point, watching them land, then fly. Some looked like sentries, simply flying a circle around the area maybe a mile in diameter. A couple of them landed in the same nest together, proving that no matter what it looks like from the ground, those things are sturdy.

Here are the pictures that I took, after taking a few minutes to stand, soaking in the sun and eons of time-less-ness as these ancient creatures did the same thing they have done for thousands of years. There is an element of time travel in a moment like this. At this time, in this place if you were not aware of any other world, it could be a time before electricity, technology and society. It is something I love to experience and am aching to do again very, very soon.

There are so many nests in this area. It is amazing to see!

This shot gives and idea of how high up in the tree tops the birds roost. It almost seems like they would be too heavy, but apparently they are ace engineers.

It seems like no matter where you look there is a bird perched in a tree or soaring over head.

That is one ancient bird with massive wings. So awe-inspiring.
